The Barcode, Printer and Vision System Application is used for Quality Assurance and Line Configuration for Labeling Lines at Campbell Soup Supply Company. The main goal for Campbell Soup Supply Company’s standpoint was to eliminate the possibility of a mislabeled product which could get out to the consumer. Through this application we are able to develop a standard industry solution.

The system uses a centralized database to extract product data and configures Barcode Readers, Printers and Vision Systems on the labeling lines for operation. While the lines are operating the system processes Barcodes in Real Time, up to 3000 Barcodes/Min, and calculates statistical information on each line. Wrong barcodes read are time stamped and logged to a Historian Database.

The Barcode, Printer & Vision System was designed to be configurable by each plant without reprogramming the system. Each production line can be independently named to allow for a tailored system to the plants’ specifications. This system has state of the art tracking capabilities. Many custom interface drivers have been developed for communications to a wide array of Barcode Readers and Printers. The system uses off the shelf software, Wonderware, to allow for system maintenance and upgrades.

Excerpt from the Wonderware Press Release:
The “Best Manufacturing Intelligence Application” awarded to Campbell Soup highlighted the company’s improvements in barcode, printer and vision system applications. The new system supported by Wonderware technology enabled the company to discover gaps in its quality system and reduced labeling issues by 97 percent. The solution saved Campbell’s approximately $250,000 in engineering costs, and can be easily deployed to other Campbell’s plants without the need for recoding.
“The adoption of the scanning technology has been hugely successful,” said Ann Gasiorek, Campbell Soup Worldwide Quality.
